Kukkiwon kup patterns

Kukkiwon uses Poomses for patterns. Poomses originate from the book 'I Ching', a Chinese oracle. The I Ching has 64 hexagrams, a combination of two sets of three lines, closed or broken. The sets of three lines are called trigrams. The closed lines represent Yang, the open lines Yin. In the chinese language, the unity of Yin and Yang is called 'taich'i'. In the Korean language, the unity is called T'ae-guk.



Taegeuk Il Jang  Heaven


This is the most basic form of Taekwondo training. The movements are walking stance, front stance,low block, high block, inside block, middle punch, front kick. For the 8th Kup.


(South, Father) The first Taeguk is the beginning of all Poomses. The associated trigram represents Yang (heaven, light), therefore, this Poomse should be performed with the greatness of He



Taegeuk Ee Jang Lake


Symbol is Tae meaning internal strength and external gentleness


After diligent practice of Taegeuk lL jang, now you have a stronger base to develop yourself further. There are more front kicks and block-kick-punch combinations in Taegeuk Ee jang. Techniques must be performed gently but with dynamic inner power. For the 7th Kup.


(South East, Youngest daughter) In the depths of the lake are treasures and mysteries. The movements of this Taeguk should be performed knowing that man has limitations, but that we can overcome these limitations. This should lead to a feeling of joy, knowing that we can control our future.



Taegeuk Sam Jang Fire


Through Taekwondo training, you have developed physical strength, and inner power. Now is the stage where the more effort you put out, the more your enthusiasm burns. New movements in Taegeuk Sahm jang are back stance, knife hand strike, knife hand block. The combinations of block-punch and block-kick require quick speed and the ability to coordinate bodily parts to create integral forces. Put speed in defense and power in attacks. For the 6th Kup.


(East, Second daughter) Fire contains a lot of energy. Fire helped man to survive, but on the other hand had some catastrophical results. This form should be performed rhythmically, with some outbursts of


Taegeuk Sah Jang Thunder


There are more advanced movements in this Poomse such as double knife hand blocks, finger tip thrust, swallow stance knife hand strike, consecutive side kicks, cross stance back fist. To prepare you for the Kyuroogi practice, there are more transitional movements to help you to improve correct body shifting and coordination. This is for the 5th Kup.


(North East, Eldest son) Thunder comes from the sky and is absorbed by the earth. Thunder is one of the most powerful natural forces, circling, gyrating. This Taeguk/Palgwe should be performed with this in mind




Taegeuk Oh Jang Wind


The wind is so gentle when it is a breeze and devastating when it becomes a hurricane. Human power can also be used either way. Taegeuk Oh jang is designed to develop the inner energy and kinetic force of the body with the application of the two opposite phenomena of nature. New movements are hammerfist, elbow strike, side kick with side punch, and jumping cross stance. Special attention is required in striking a specific target area with the elbow. For the 4th Kup.


(South West, Eldest daughter) Wind is a gently force, but can sometimes be furious, destroying everything in it's path. Poomse Taeguk/Palgwe Oh Jang should be performed like the wind: gently, but knowing the ability of mass destruction with a single movement.




Taegeuk Yuk Jang Water


Symbol is Kahm meaning the water - the origin of the life


Water symbolizes a constant flow and the ultimate flexibility. Not only must the techniques flow like water but the mind must be flexible as well. New techniques are single knifehand high section block, roundhouse kick, palm press block and pyunhee suhgi in the middle of the poomse. Special attention must be paid to the foot position right after executing the two roundhouse kicks. For the 3rd Kup.


(West, Second son) Water can move a mountain. The movements of this Poomse should be performed like water. Sometimes standing still like water in a lake, sometimes thriving as a river.




Taegeuk Chil Jang Mountain


Symbol is Kahn meaning a mountain


A mountain is the spirit of firmness and strength. At this level the practitioner's resolution for training Taekwondo starts firmly rooting in the heart. The meaning of self-improvement through Taekwondo becomes deeper daily. Therefore, it is recommended to reexamine all of the learned skills so that the base for progress is strongly secured. You may experience some difficulties and obstacles mentally and physically. Effort is required to get through this stage. New techniques are low double knife hand block, palm press block, scissors block, knee strike, middle section opening block, cross hand block, side punch, cat stance and horseriding stance. Powerful and articulate execution is required in single movements and smooth transitions in combination techniques. For the 2nd Kup.


(North West, Youngest son) Mountains will always look majestic, no matter the size. This Poomse should be performed with the feeling that all movements are this majestic and deserved to be praised.




Taegeuk Pal Jang Earth


Symbol is Kohn meaning the Earth


The earth is the foundation of the growth for all life. It is this beginning of the life and all lives must return to where they began. Taegeuk Pahl jang is the last poomse before becoming a black belt. The end means a new beginning. Perfection of all basic Taekwondo skills and maturity of character is the goal at this stage. If pride, confidence, and dignity were the results of the training, honesty and humbleness are the prerequisites for the black belt stage. It is required to perfect Taegeuk Il jang to Taegeuk Pahl jang to be eligible to apply for the Ist Dan black belt test. New techniques are jump front kick, elbow strike, single mountain block, and uppercut. Accurate footwork is required for combinations. Required for the 1st Kup.


(North, Mother) The associated trigram of this Poomse is Yin: the end of the beginning, the evil part of all that is good. Even in this darkness, there is still some light. Performing this Taeguk, one should be aware that this is the last Taeguk/Palgwe to be learned, it also is the end of a circle, and therefore it is also the first, the second etc...





Taekwondo Black Belt Patterns







Poomse Koryo symbolizes seonbae which means a learned man, who is characterized by a strong martial spirit as well as a righteous spirit. The choonbi-sugi (ready stance) is tongmilgi which promotes concentration by placing the hands between the upper and lower abdomen, the center of ki in the body. The movement line of Koryo represents the Chinese character for seonbae or seonbi, which means a learned man or a man of virtue in Korean. For the 1st dan.




Keumgang, meaning diamond, is symbolized by hardness. Mount Keumgang, which is regarded as the center of the national spirit and the origin of Keumgang Yoksa (warrior named by Buddha) who represents the mightiest warrior, is the spiritual foundation of this form. the line of movements symbolizes the Chinese character for mountain. The movements of the poomse should be performed powerfully and with good balance to demonstrate the dignity of the Keumgang spirit. For the 2nd dan.





Taebaek (bright mountain) is the name given to Mt. Paektu, the mountain from which Tangun, the founder of the Korean people, ruled the country. Taebaek symbolizes the sacred and humanitarian ruling spirit of Tangun. The line of movements symbolizes the Chinese character for a word meaning the bridge between heaven and Earth. For the 3rd Dan.




Pyongwon means a plain or a vast field of land. It is the source of life for all creatures and place from which all creatures gain sustenance. Pyongwon is based on the idea of peace and struggle resulted from the principles of origin and use. The Choon-bi sogi requires a concentration of force in the lower abdomen, the source of all strength, much like the land is the source of strength for all life. The line of movements symbolizes the origin and transformation of the plain. For the 4th Dan.





The word sipjin is derived from the principle of longevity which maintains there are ten creatures of long life: sun, moon, mountain, water, stone, pine tree, herb of eternal youth, turtle, deer and crane. This poomse symbolizes the longevity humans derive from these everlasting elements of nature. The line of movements is the Chinese character for ten, symbolizing the ten creatures of long life and the infinity of the decimal system. For the 5th Dan.




Jitae means a man standing on the Earth looking at the sky. A man on the Earth represents the struggle of humanity. The line of movement symbolizes a man standing on the Earth preparing to spring up toward the heaven.


For the 6th Dan.





Cheon Kwon means Heavens Greatness or the origin of all being. Its infinite nature signifies change, creation and completion. The movements are characterized by circular arm movements, symbolizing the greatness and inclusiveness of the Cheon Kwon concept. The line of movements symbolizes a man descending to Earth from the heavens, being empowered by the heavens and attaining oneness between the Earthly world (body) and the heavenly world (mind). For the 7th Dan.





Han Soo means water which is the source of sustenance and growth for all life. Han Soo symbolizes the birth of a life, growth, strength, weakness, harmony, magnanimity, and adaptability through life. The nature of water, characterized by unbreakability and flexibility, is the basis for this poomse. The line of movements symbolizes the Chinese character for water. For the 8th Dan.





Ilyeo symbolizes the thoughts of the great monk Wonhyo of the Silla Dynasty. It teaches that a point, a line or a circle ends up at one. Poomse Ilyeo represents the harmonization of body and spirit, which is the culmination of martial arts practice. The line of movements symbolizes the Buddhist mark which means a state of perfect selflessness where origin, substance and service come into congruity. For the 8th Dan.
